Northern Ireland

In this episode, Ralph explores the moors and castles of Northern Ireland and learns what culinary life is like on the Green Isle. Here he rubs elbows with Irish Royalty, farms alongside traditional mussel farmers, and learns that you can include Bushmills Irish whiskey in just about any dish! Ralph tries to avoid one traditional Irish breakfast dish though, black pudding. Yes, a sausage made with blood.

Did You Know?

  • Bushmills Grain Whiskey is aged a minimum of five years in oak barrels to bring out the golden color.
  • The Old Bushmills Distillery is the oldest licensed whiskey distillery in the world.
  • Mussels feed by filtering up to 18 gallons of water per day.
  • Mussels can live for up to 50 years, but cultured ones are harvested at around 28 months.
  • The mussel's nemesis is the dog whelk, which bores a hole through its shell and sucks out the soft parts.
  • Mussels have been cultivated for almost 800 years in Europe, and have been used as a food source for more then 2,000 years.
