The Charlatans

The Charlatans

A fusion of funky guitars and catchy piano riffs on "Blackened Blue Eyes", the album's opening track and first top 30 single, paves the way for a simultaneously up-tempo yet painfully heartfelt album from The Charlatans. Simpatico is the bands ninth record to date and by far their most surprising. Yet, surely the biggest surprise, on an album packed full rhythmical swings and rock'n'roll roundabouts, are the momentary lapses into Reggae... Reggae, from an indie band... I hear you cry. Yet, such daring moments do exist on "City Of The Dead", with tracks such as "N.Y.C. (There's No Need To Stop)" and "Muddy Ground" only adding to the urban party flavor. Of course, the album is not without its more somber Charlatan moments, including "Glory Glory" and "Dead Man's Eye", but bassist Martin Blunt puts it best with his description of "When The Lights Go Out In London":  "It's about coming back stronger... Same with Dead Man's Eyes' ... There's a resilience there that's pure Charlatans." Simpatico is the bands ninth record to date and by far their most surprising.
