Damn it's a shame they don't give away convertibles with pop albums! Mojave 3's new album "Puzzles Like You" should be played loudly whilst cruising along an American freeway. With stories of small towns and truckers on songs like "Truck Driving Man", "Puzzles Like You" fuses up-tempo guitars, vintage synths and loud tambourines with toe-tapping drums culminating in a veritable feast of 60's garage-pop. The acoustic sounds and melodic harmonies we've come to know and love of Neil Halstead, Rachel Goswell and Ian McCutcheon still feature, and whilst "Most Days" and "You Said It Before" pay homage to their former laid back sound, this is an irrevocably more poppy affair than previous offerings. However, the album was not recorded without its troubles; following a mouse infestation during its conception, the record was quickly sent to mixing maestro Victor Van Vugt (who's previously worked with PJ Harvey and Nick Cave) to mix the record in his New York studio. The end result echoes the vocal ensembles of Belle and Sebastien and is by far Mojave 3's most energetic and accessible record to date.
