Syria

Syria is serious about manners. Its polite social code keeps crime to a minimum, but an anti-American protest here and there can create a violent vibe. Because of the extreme heat, water, hats and sunscreen are absolute necessities. In addition to other obvious tips, like avoiding tap water and unwashed fruit, there are a few other precautionary measures to keep in mind.

Just DEET it: Syrian sand flies are known to unleash a nasty case of leishmaniasis through their bites. Symptoms can range from a growing skin lump to a life-threatening fever, anemia and dramatic weight loss. A solid layer of toxic repellant should keep the sand flies away.

Mob rules: In the more remote areas of Damascus, there have been reports of a pushier form of begging, where foreigners aren't so much asked for money, as much as they are aggressively coaxed into making a contribution. One beggar quickly becomes two, until travelers may find themselves surrounded by a small, persuasive cadre. Exercise caution. Be on the lookout and keep to yourself.

Beware the cousin's wife's brother: Asking for advice or recommendations, especially about accommodation, doctors and dentists, from taxi drivers may lead down a dark and remote alleyway, where sub par rooms and a nice kickback for the driver await. Stick to your itinerary and use the embassy as a resource for medical emergencies.
