Due to the current political climate, Saudi Arabia is classified as a high-risk country, where residential compounds, restaurants, shopping malls and all other buildings associated with Western interests or even merely frequented by Westerners may be targeted. Even though Saudi Arabia is one of the Middle East's most modern and international countries, strict Islam is the law of the land here, and extreme modesty is strongly enforced, like with weapons. If your lashings happen to get infected, Saudi Arabia does offer high-quality first world medical resources.
Don't rock the casbah (or the boat): Under no circumstances whatsoever are you to say anything that could be perceived as an insult to King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz, Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz, Islam, or the Saudi people or government. You are likely to face serious trouble. Assume that you might be under surveillance throughout your trip.
Don't ask, don't tell, and don't even think about it: Homosexuality is punishable by death.
Shoplifters beware: The five finger discount might wind up costing more than you think. In Saudi Arabia, theft is punishable by hand amputation.
