It’s relatively easy to play it safe in Oman, where crime is pretty nil, and terrorism has yet to catch on as a major social trend. The wildlife and wild rides pose the biggest risks, and if you don’t go looking for trouble, it’s unlikely you’ll find it.
Don’t get bitten by the bug: The mosquitoes of Oman will do more than just leave you with a cluster of itchy bites. They’ll sink their teeth in and give you a nasty case of malaria. Slather up with DEET, throw a net over your bed and soldier on through the weird dreams and spooky side effects of anti-malaria pills.
Keep your head out the sand: Barren stretches of sand make crossing the Omani desert more challenging than you might think. There are no street lights, no street signs, no landmarks and no Triple A. Don’t go it alone. Travel in a caravan of at least two to three, and leave word of your itinerary with someone. Bring extra water and gas, spare tires and any tools that can help you out of a bind.
