If ongoing, armed conflict is your idea of an exciting trip, Darfur, located in western Sudan is often engaged in massive warfare. While travel to this country is not advised, here are some tips from this week’s Darfur episode…
Prevent common causes of death. If you go to Al Geneina, be sure to have an oral re-hydration packet with you in case you come down with one of Darfur’s three leading causes of death- diarrhea. The other two are malaria and acute respiratory system problems.
Take green transportation. Don’t worry about car pollution in Darfur. The main way to get around is by donkey.
When you get the feeling you’re being watched, you are. Western Darfur’s boarder stretches 750 kilometers and is patrolled by 500 officers. You’ll be sure to run into an officer at some point along your journey.
Pack light. Darfur’s average temperature is 100 degrees F. Dress appropriately for the weather.
Bring your own aspirin. The International Medical Corps operates seven primary health care centers and two mobile clinics for 288,000 people. Those suffering the effects of poverty, violence, and conflict receive emergency aid and health care on an urgency basis.
